Mustafa Yavuz is a faculty member at the Department of Philosophy, Istanbul Medeniyet University.
He received his BA degree from the Department of Biology Education, Atatürk Faculty of Education, Marmara University in 2001. He received his MA (2003) degree from the Biology program of Marmara University, with a study entitled Pamukkale Yöresi Likenlerin Üzerinde Taksonomik ve Ekolojik Bir Çalışma / A Taxonomical and Ecological Study on Lichens of Pamukkale District. He received his PhD (2010)) degree from the same program with the thesis entitled Gölcük Tabiat Parkı Liken Florası ve Isparta Hava Kirliliğinin Likenlerle Derecelendirilmesi / Lichen Flora of Gölcük Nature Park and Grading Isparta’s Air Pollution via Lichens. He also received his second PhD (2022) degree from the Philosophy program of Istanbul Medeniyet University with a thesis entitled İslam Felsefe-Bilim Tarihinde Kitâb el-Nebât Geleneği Bakımından Bitkiler / Plants with Regard to the Kitab al-Nabat Tradition in the Islamic Philosophy-Science.
He has authored Vekilharçtan Mektuplar (2020, Kadran Yayınevi, novella), Biyolojiyi Benzersiz Kılan Nedir? (2022, Küre Yayınları, translation of What Makes Biology Unique? By Ernst Mayr), Tabiattan Tıbba Osmanlı’da Canlı Bilimleri (2024, Ketebe Yayınları, editorial), Bitki Biliminin Kök(en)leri (2024, Ötüken Neşriyat, monograph) and Likenler Tıp, Bilim ve Tarih Kesişiminde Bir Simbiyoz Hikâyesi(2025, Nobel Yayıncılık, monograph).
He has articles in national and international journals on lichen taxonomy, ecology & biomonitoring; history of materia medica, history of botany and philosophy of biology.
